Theresa recently wrote a letter to Fair Oaks Chamber of Commerce members describing the McLaren's new venture.
"... We own the Electric Pencil, which specializes in publishing newsletters, self publishing projects and annual reports. We have owned and operated the Electric Pencil since August 28, 1993. We have dropped all other projects, and are now focused solely on publishing Fair Oaks Guardian.
I graduated as a sociologist from Colorado State University, but have never worked in the field for which I was trained. For the past fifteen years I have worked in the printing and publishing industry. With a background in business management, and a knack for keeping writers and artists in balance with the checkbook, I handle the advertising and the business end of the Electric Pencil -- and also write for Fair Oaks Guardian.
Mike graduated from Colorado State University in 1986, with a Masters in Writing and Teaching Writing, and a Bachelor's in Medieval Mythology and Printmaking. He taught writing at Colorado State University for awhile. His first real job, in 1976 was as a cub reported, layout man and paper boy for the Redmond Spokesman in Oregon. Mike went to college to be a newspaperman, for his own paper or to at least work for a newspaper, sitting behind the backstop at Candlestick writing for the sports section of the Examiner.
We have a wonderful twelve year old daughter (smarter that all of use in the office) who attends John Holst Elementary School. She owns a small pet sitting business.
Fair Oaks Guardian is an extension of Health Guardian, a newspaper dedicated to natural health. Publishing a Fair Oaks newspaper was an idea that all of us at the Electric Pencil discussed many times, but we never got around to putting it up for a vote. The urging from the community in the past few months caused us to take a more serious look at such a project. we live here, we'd like to see a community newspaper dedicated to the Fair Oaks community, and since we're a publishing company it makes sense that we produce the paper. ..."
I have only met Theresa briefly at the Chamber of Commerce meeting and have not yet had an opportunity to talk to her or Mike. But, I would like to wish them well on their new venture and offer them what assistance I can to help make their new paper successful. If the Fair Oaks Guardian is able to publish an eight page newsprint paper like the Health Guardian each month, the Guardian will be in July 1996 what I hope the print version of the Fair Oaks Voice is in a year or so.
